Why we made this website
We created this website to bring light to the issue of child soldiers fighting wars around the world. The main focus is to raise awareness about this unfortunate situation occurring overseas. The website does this to provide knowledge about child soldiers as well as encouraging people to get involved. When people see the website, our goal is they will spread the word and move towards a child-soldier-free-world. While studying this topic, we learned about ways we can get involved in helping these children, as well as organizations that are trying to prevent the circumstances that lead to child soldiers. The Invisible Children, War Child, and Peace Direct are three organizations that are helping children who have faced the tragedies of war. These organizations do a terrific job of trying to prevent the use of child soldiers, but they need OUR help. That is why we put links to all three of these agencies in our website.
We learned that to raise a substantial amount of awareness, social media is the best alternate. Today there are 1 billion Facebook users, and 500 million people on Twitter. The world has never been more connected. If all those users took time to get involved with social media, there is no doubt that child soldiers could be stopped. Through “Kony 2012”, more people have become aware of the child soldiers working for the Lords Resistance Army (LRA) in Uganda. That’s why we made our “Action Plan” tab outlines a few possibilities to try to prevent circumstances that lead to the use of child soldiers.
While studying this issue, we learned that we are so fortunate to live in a country with a basic charter of rights and freedoms. Children all over the world are being killed, manipulated, and forced into slavery and war. When people read our overview about the horrific details of child soldiers, they will hopefully feel the need to help these children. It is very important that these people know how to get involved, that is why we added a “Get Involved” tab to make it easy for people to give aid.
Our website gives people both basic and in-depth information on the issue of child soldiers. It helps people to understand the violation of human rights that takes place in our world every day. It also gives people a way they can partake in helping to end this catastrophe. From making a direct donation to setting up a benefit concert, our website gives you the outline of how and what needs to be done. The website encourages people to raise awareness and it promotes individuals fighting for a cause. As awareness is raised child soldiers can be stopped.
